Loyalist grads take two Firsts in National Newspaper Awards photo categories

The National Newspaper Awards recognizing the best in Canadian journalism held their awards night at the Canadian War Museum on May 3 in Ottawa. Of the four photo categories, two were won by Loyalist Photojournalism grads.

Tyler Anderson of the National Post took first place in the News Feature category with a photo of a worker sleeping back stage during a speech by Toronto mayor Rob Ford.Screen shot 2013-05-07 at 12.18.20 AM

Anderson was also a runner-up in the Feature photo category with an image of a Ugandan woman whose nose and ears were cut off by the Lord Resistance Army. It was an excellent year all around for Tyler also teaches part time in Loyalist’s Photojournalism Program, tandem teaching Multimedia classes with Daniel Williams. Two of Tyler and Daniel’s students were honoured recently during the non-student industry awards handed out by the News Photographers Association of Canada.

Loyalist grad Peter Power of the Globe and Mail won first place honours in the Feature category with a heart wrenching photo of a palliative care scene. Runner up was grad Aaron Vincent-Elkaim with a photo shot during the funeral of a shooting victim in Toronto.
